Description: Naked – I – Memoirs of a Humanist is a lively and reflective smorgasbord of the author’s life-journey experiences. It is a riveting biographical tale of a liberal thinker told in a disarmingly frank and candid language. The book starts with an intriguing sentence. “Barre Main Jin dikhao” which hints at the juvenile curiosity to know about supernatural things. Although the youngest of the street urchins, Khayyam could not see the jinns but the mysterious episode instilled in him a lifelong passion to grapple with mysteries and expose myths. His childhood memories are very absorbing and contain a good food for thought both for children and parents alike. Like a well-crafted kaleidoscope, the book depicts different phases of the author’s personality from a young petarian to a university student; an Air Force officer; a free-lance writer and, finally, a humanist. Although the central theme of the book revolves around the author’s unceasing quest for the truth, his narration interspersed with humorous anecdotes and witticism makes it all the more piquant and readable. The book is more than a mere portrayal of the writer’s life. It is, indeed, the voyage of his transformation, dotted by various episodes and incidents of life, and his eventual intellectual growth. His diction is crisply plain and lucid. As a learned man wedded to intellectual pursuits, Khayyam appears to be wearing his heart on his sleeve throughout his descriptions. His expressions ring with chaste sincerity and spontaneity, free from labored embellishments.
